the girl

She was the girl who dreamed, who saw things how they were but never really let it get in the way of her wishful thinking. She laughed more than she cried. She lived with no intentions of ever turning back or regretting anything

If you could have one superpower what would it be?
I would love to be able to orb. Just be a witch in general, I have wanted to since I was 10 years old.

Who is your style icon?
I adore the simple elegance of Jenifer Aniston, sexy boho look of Ke$ha, and the classy leave-it-to-the-imagination style of Marilyn Monroe.

What is your favorite quote?
"Be soft..dont let the world make you hard...dont let the pain make you hate... dont let the bitterness steal
your sweetness...take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree,
you still believe it to be a beautiful place.."

What is the best compliment you ever received?
I was his sunshine.

What playlist/CD is in your CD player/playing right now?
Right now I am listening to the tv guide but my pandora is set on another kind of green by john mayer station

Are you a night owl or morning person?

I can be either... I love getting up at 7am and starting my days with a big cup of coffee, the news and adderall...depending on what kind of day I am going to have. BUT I love the mystery of night, I love running barefoot in the grass at night with the moon guiding me.

Do you prefer dogs or cats?
Is this a question? Cats are the spawn of satin.
& stoli bear is the cutest dog known to man

What is the meaning behind your blog name.
hmm life can be whatever you want it to be.. and this is my so called life or the life im living in the present.

zen

We all have the potential to fall in love a thous&times in our lifetime. It's easy. The first girl I ever loved was someone I knew in sixth grade. Her name was Missy; we talked about horses. The last girl I love will be someone I haven't even met yet, probably. They all count. But there are certain people u love who do something else; they define how u classify what love is supposed to feel like. These are the most important people in ur life, &u'll meet maybe four or five of these people over the span of 80 years. But there's still one more tier to all this; there is always one person who u love who becomes that definition. It usually happens retrospectively, but it always happens eventually. This is the person who unknowingly sets the template for what u will always love about other people, even if some of those lovable qualities are self-destructive &unreasonable. The person who defines ur understanding of love is not inherently different than anyone else, &they're often just the person u happen to meet the first time u really, really want to love someone. But that person still wins. They win, &u lose. Because for the rest of ur life, they will control how u feel about everyone else.
-Chuck Klosterman, Killing Urself to Live

Become the artist.

The desire to change starts with u. Once u feel it, use that passion to experiment &try new things. Become the artist – life is the masterpiece. To get healthy, u might challenge urself to 10 minutes of exercise each morning. Looking to transform ur diet? Eat like Leo. Take a st&against debt by cutting up ur credit cards. Burnout brings strong emotions like anger, fear, jealousy &sadness. Use those feelings to light ur creativity on fire. Keep mixing it up with new ideas &projects.

Set people free.

Don’t expect ur employer to relieve stress at work. Don’t expect ur lover to make u happy. Ur burnout is not their responsibility. Give urself permission to do all the work. Setting people free from ur expectations will put u back in control. U can be burnout’s victim or victor. Find one reason to do something, not a million reasons to quit. Now, no one stands in ur way.

Focus on tiny movements.

That’s all it takes to change ur life. If u want to quit smoking, u can stop putting a cigarette in ur mouth &lighting the end. Once u master the way u move, u can do anything. U can decide to write instead of go out to lunch. U can put away the beer &go to bed early. U can feel ur feet on the ground for a run. Movements, no matter how small, shape ur entire life. How u go through the motions is up to u. Ask urself today: Is the way I move beautiful? Or destructive?

Start over.

Change can be slow, but it has to start somewhere. For me, burnout became beautiful when I fed new ideas to my broken spirit. Inspiration was everywhere once I wanted to look. Sites like The Happiness Project &Zen Habits gave me courage to begin a new life.

I know now: Burnout is just the beginning. It might feel awful at times. If it didn’t, how would u know when to try something new? Let ur imagination fly. Learn what lights up ur world before burnout defines it. Ask urself for help first. Then, start with tiny movements. Tiny actions. Like building a new foundation, brick by brick, u can create something strong &beautiful.

The Only Guide to Happiness U’ll Ever Need

“The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. U have to catch it urself.” - Benjamin Franklin

For some of us, the ultimate goal in life is happiness.

Whether we see fulfillment in our work, contentment in our relationships, passion in our hobbies … we strive to find happiness.

“Happiness is the meaning &the purpose of life, the whole aim &end of human existence.” - Aristotle

&yet, this search for happiness can be a lifelong search, especially if we look at happiness as something that will come once we achieve certain goals — a nice home, a perfect spouse, the ultimate promotion … &when we get these goals, instead of being happy, we often are looking forward to being happy when we meet our next goals.

Happiness shouldn’t be something that happens to us in the future, maybe someday, if things go well. Happiness should be here &now, who we are now, with the people we’re with now, doing the things we’re doing now. &if we’re not with people who make us happy, &doing things that make us happy … then we should take action to make that happen.

That’s the simple formula for happiness. Take action to do the things that make u happy, with the people who make u happy, &to be happy with the person u are now. (Disclaimer: this probably doesn’t apply, of course, to those who are clinically depressed or who have other similar medical conditions which I am not qualified to discuss.)

Don’t wait for happiness. Seize it.

“If u want to be happy, be.” - Leo Tolstoy

Here’s how — a list of action u can take today to seize that happiness. U don’t have to do these all at once, but u should do most (if not all) of them eventually, &sooner rather than later. Pick one or two &start today.

  1. Be present. Don’t think about how great things will be in the future. Don’t dwell on what did or didn’t happen in the past. Learn to be in the here &now, &experience life as it’s happening, &appreciate the world for the beauty that it is, right now. Practice makes perfect with this crucial skill.
  2. Connect with others. In my experience, very few things can achieve happiness as well as connecting with other human beings, cultivating relationships, bonding with others. Some tips on doing this.
  3. Spend time with those u love. This might seem almost the same as the item above, &in reality it’s an extension of the same concept, a more specific application. Spending time with the people u love is extremely important to happiness … &yet it’s incredible how often we do just the opposite, &spend time alone, or disconnected from those we love, or spend time with people we don’t much like. Make it a priority to schedule time with the people u love. Make that ur most important item of the day. For myself, I have a time when I cut off work, &the rest of the day is for my family. Weekends are exclusively for my family. &by setting aside this sacred time, I ensure my happiness by letting nothing come between me &the people I love most.
  4. Do the things u love. What do u love doing most? Figure out the 4-5 things u love doing most in life, the things that make u happiest, &make those the foundation of ur day, every day. Eliminate as much of the rest as possible. For me, the things I love doing are: spending time with my family, writing, reading, &running. I do those things every day, &very little else. It may take awhile to get ur life down to ur essentials like I have (it took me a few years of careful elimination &rescheduling &saying “no” to requests that aren’t on my short list), but it’s worth the effort.
  5. Focus on the good things. Everyone’s life has positive &negative aspects — whether u’re happy or not depends largely on which aspects u focus on. Did u lose today’s softball game? At least u got to spend time with friends doing something fun. Did u sprain ur ankle running? Well, ur body probably needed a week’s rest anyway, as u were running too much! Did ur baby get sick? Well, at least it’s only a flu virus &nothing life-threatening … &at least u have a wonderful baby to nurse to health! U can see my point — almost everything has a positive side, &focusing on the positives make all the difference. My Auntie Kerry died last week (as u know), &I’m still grieving, but 1) I’m happy I spent time with her before her death; 2) her death has brought our family closer together; 3) her suffering has ended; &4) it reminded me to spend more time with the people I love while they’re still alive.
  6. Do work u love. An extension, of course, of doing the things u love, but applied to work. Are u already doing the work u love? Then u’re one of the lucky ones, &u should appreciate how lucky u are. If u aren’t doing the work u love, u should make it a priority to try to find work u’re passionate about, &to steer ur career in that direction. Take myself for example: I was doing work that I was good at (just last year), but that I wasn’t passionate about. I was passionate about writing, &so I pursued blogging … &with a year of hard work, was able to quit my day job &blog full time. I’m so much happier these days!
  7. Lose urself in ur work. Once u’ve found work u love, the key is to lose urself in it … clear away all distractions, find an interesting &challenging task, &just pour all ur energy &focus into that task. With practice, u’ll forget about the outside world. There are few work-related joys that equal this feeling. Read more.
  8. Help others. Is there any better feeling than helping a fellow human being? There aren’t many. &it’s not too hard — here are 25 ways.
  9. Find time for peace. With the hectic pace of life these days, it’s hard to find a moment of peace. But if u can make time for solitude &quiet, it can be one of the happiest parts of ur day. Here’s how.
  10. Notice the small things. Instead of waiting for the big things to happen — marriage, kids, house, nice car, big promotion, winning the lottery — find happiness in the small things that happen every day. Little things like having a quiet cup of coffee in the early morning hours, or the delicious &simple taste of berries, or the pleasure of reading a book with ur child, or taking a walk with ur partner. Noticing these small pleasures, throughout ur day, makes a huge difference.
  11. Develop compassion. Compassion is developing a sense of shared suffering with others … &taking steps to alleviate the suffering of others. I think too often we forget about the suffering of others while focusing on our own suffering, &if we learned to share the suffering of others, our suffering would seem insignificant as a result. Compassion is an extremely valuable skill to learn, &u get better with practice. Here’s how.
  12. Be grateful. Learning to be grateful for what’s in our lives, for the people who have enriched our lives, goes a long way toward happiness. It helps us to appreciate what we have &what we have received, &the people who have helped us. Read more.
  13. Become a lifelong learner. I find an inordinate amount of pleasure in reading, in learning about new things, in enriching my knowledge as I get older. I think spending time reading some of the classics, as well as passionately pursuing new interests, is energy well invested. Try to do a little of it every day, &see if it doesn’t make u happier.
  14. Simplify ur life. This is really about identifying the things u love (see above) &then eliminating everything else as much as possible. By simplifying ur life in this way, u create time for ur happiness, &u reduce the stress &chaos in ur life. In my experience, living a very simple life is also a pleasure in itself.
  15. Slow down. Similar to simplifying, slowing down is just a matter of reminding urself that there’s no need to rush through life. Schedule less things on ur calendar, &more space between things. Learn to eat slower, drive slower, walk slower (unless u’re doing it for exercise). Going slowly helps to reduce stress, &improve the pleasure of doing things, &keeps u in the present moment.
  16. Exercise. I’ve written about the pleasures of exercise many times. It can be hard to start an exercise program (here’s how) but once u get going, it relieves stress &can really give u a good feeling. I feel joyful every time I go out for a run!
  17. Meditate. U don’t need to join a Zendo or get a mat or learn any lotus positions, but the simplest form of meditation can really help u to be present &to get out of the worrying part of ur head. U can do it right now: close ur eyes &simply try to focus on ur breathing as long as possible. Pay attention to the breath as it comes into ur body, &then as it goes out. When u feel ur mind start to wander, don’t fret, but just simply acknowledge the other thoughts, &then return to ur breathing. Do this a little each day &u’ll get better at it.
  18. Learn to accept. One of the challenges for people like me — people who want to improve themselves &change the world — is learning to accept things as they are. Sometimes it’s better to learn to accept, &to love, the world as it is, &people as they are, rather than to try to make everything &everyone conform to an impossible ideal. I’m not saying u should accept cruelty &injustice, but learn to love things when they are less than “perfect”.
  19. Spend time in nature. Go outside &take a walk each day, or take the time to watch a sunset or sunrise. Or find a body of water — the ocean, a lake, a river, a pond — &spend time taking a look at it, contemplating it. If u’re lucky enough to live near some woods, or a mountain, or a canyon, go hiking. Time in nature is time invested in ur happiness.
  20. Find the miracles in life. I absolutely believe in miracles, &believe that they are all around us, every day. My children are all miracles. The kindnesses of strangers are miracles. The life growing all around us is a miracle. Find those miracles in ur life, &enjoy the majesty of them.

Hair growth recipe?

A great hair growing treatment might be made with, honey, egg yolk and hibiscus extract
Yu get some red hibiscus plants -from India preferably and mash it up, you then boil it and then permit it to sit until cold, when done combine the hibiscus water with 1 egg yoke and 2 tablespoons of honey and mix. When you are done all it to it for a day. Now use that paste on your scalp and hair. å it to sit for an hour and then wash it out when done
The next hair growing treatment is made by using straightforward almond oil on your scalp. Simply take enough almond oil and soak your scalp and hair. Massage your hair with the ideas of your fingers and enable the oil to sit on your scalp for a minimum of an hour and then wash off
The most effective method to use the almond oil as a hair growing treatment is to ensure you massage the oil onto your scalp. Do not just pour it. The massage helps the oil penetrate the scalp and helps regrow your hair. Perform this three times a week for ideal outcomes
- mira

1 tablespoon finely grated fresh ginger
1 tablespoon sesame or jojoba oil
1. This formula can be applied either before or after shampooing. If applied after, be sure to rinse extremely well.
2. Combine the ingredients, massage into the scalp, and leave on for at least 30 minutes. (You can leave on overnight to receive the maximum benefit.)
3. Shampoo or rinse out with tepid water

"Success - To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; this is to have succeeded."

The Guy In The Glass
When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that guy has to say.
For it isn't your Father or Mother or Wife,
Who judgement upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the guy staring back from the glass.
He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.
You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,
And think you're a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.
You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the guy in the glass.

May 1st, ding dong Osama is dead.... but where is the proof?

"This is the secret of propaganda: Those who are to be persuaded by it should be completely immersed in the ideas of the propaganda, without ever noticing they are being immersed in it." -- Joseph Goebbels

A U.S. official says Osama bin Laden has been buried at sea.
After bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. forces in Pakistan, senior administration officials said the body would be handled according to Islamic practice and tradition. That practice calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours, the official said. Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult, the official said. So the U.S. decided to bury him at sea.
The official, who spoke Monday on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive national security matters, did not immediately say where that occurred.
Okkkkaaayyy sooo I am ALL for capturing and killing Bin Laden. BUT burying at sea with no evidence nor pictures to prove he is dead??? I need to do my research and lots of explaining from the U.S government, cause I'm not not gonna let them pull the wool over my eyes!
Osama did not thin twice or feel a bit of empathy for killing Americans, no matter what for of killing it was. He burned thousands to death that were stuck in the twin towers?? CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHY IN THE WORLD WE CREMATE PEOPLE EVERYDAY AND WE COULDN'T BURN THE MOTHER FUCKER WHO TORE OUR COUNTRY APART? Or bury him in the ground dead and deep to knowwww that there will be no more sight, or issues of Bin Laden. You never know if his sick ass followers will find his body and find a way to resurrect or do something as extreme by mailing is body to the White House. We got who we wanted why couldn't we have finished the job?
All Osama said was kill kill kill, why couldn't we completely put the man to death, burnnnnn him after all he has done to our country?

"Today we are reminded that as a nation there is nothing we can't do," Obama said of the news bound to lift his political standing and help define his presidency. He hailed the pride of those who broke out in overnight celebrations as word spread around the globe.

Well then why did we release his dead body into the waters, where is could float it's way to god knows where?

We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail.
George W. Bush, Speech after 9/11 attacks 43rd President of US (1946 - )

I wonder what Bush Jr. thinks about the way we "got rid" of his body....

Watching the sunset today by the river with stoli

... where the sun and water meet to form the perfect horizon and there was a bridge over the creek where the trees opened up to see the horizon. We sat over the edge and watched the sunset; time stopped and for that infinite second, the biggest feeling of joy and sadness was nowhere to be found. If I could, I would soak up every drop of that moment, that feeling and I would send it from my heart to yours... Because you need to experience that kind of happiness...

Trastevere- The heart of Rome

TRASTEVERE-While Rome entices with its extraordinary monuments, Trastevere, one of its many distinct neighborhoods, captures the traveler's heart. Trastevere, which translates literally to "across the Tiber," was once considered the outskirts of Rome. Allowed to develop its own flavor and now part of il centro storico, it's the perfect place to glimpse a bit of the old world while still enjoying the lifestyle of today's Romans.
Often described as Bohemian, homes bedecked with flower boxes and clinging ivy intertwine with coffee bars, restaurants, and one-of-a-kind boutiques. Buildings in terracotta, maize, and wine cast a glow, like a daylong sunset. From the cobblestone streets to the overhanging laundry lines, senses are pleasantly awakened with every step.

Florence here I come!

Santa Croce

Teatro Del Sale.
Larger-than-life chef Fabio Picchi is one of Florence's living treasures. Having colonised almost an entire block near the Mercato Sant'Ambrogio with his trio of the Cibrèo restaurant, trattoria and cafe, he went on to open one of the city's most unique institutions in 2002, the eccentric Teatro del Sale . Occupying an old theatre, this members-only club (tourists welcome, annual membership fee €5) is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, culminating at 9.30pm in a live performance of drama, music or comedy arranged by artistic director Maria Cassi, a famous Florentine actress (and Picchi's wife). Dinners are hectic affairs – you grab a chair, serve yourself water, wine and antipasti and then wait for Picchi to yell out what's just about to be served before queuing at the glass hatch for your primo and secondo. Dessert and coffee are laid out buffet-style just prior to the performance. Come during the day to join the club and make a reservation for that evening, and then enjoy a coffee and sugar-dusted ciambella (doughnut ring) at charming Café Cibrèo , in the street opposite.

I love van morrison

Crazy Love lyricsSongwriters: Morrison, Van;
I can hear her heart beat for a thousand miles
And the heaven's open every time she smiles
And when I come to her that's where I belong
Yet I'm running to her like a river's song

She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love

She's got a fine sense of humor when I'm feeling low down
And when I come to her when the sun goes down
Take away my trouble, take away my grief
Take away my heartache, in the night like a thief

She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love
[- From :http://www.elyrics.net/read/v/van-morrison-lyrics/crazy-love-lyrics.html -]
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love

Yes I need her in the daytime
Yes I need her in the night
Yes I want to throw my arms around her
Kiss her hug her kiss her hug her tight

And when I'm returning from so far away
She gives me some sweet lovin' brighten up my day
Yes it makes me righteous, yes it makes me feel whole
Yes it makes me mellow down in to my soul

She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love

We all have the potential to fall in love a thousand times in our lifetime. It's easy. The first girl I ever loved was someone I knew in sixth grade. Her name was Missy; we talked about horses. The last girl I love will be someone I haven't even met yet, probably. They all count. But there are certain people you love who do something else; they define how you classify what love is supposed to feel like. These are the most important people in your life, and you'll meet maybe four or five of these people over the span of 80 years. But there's still one more tier to all this; there is always one person who you love who becomes that definition. It usually happens retrospectively, but it always happens eventually. This is the person who unknowingly sets the template for what you will always love about other people, even if some of those lovable qualities are self-destructive and unreasonable. The person who defines your understanding of love is not inherently different than anyone else, and they're often just the person you happen to meet the first time you really, really want to love someone. But that person still wins. They win, and you lose. Because for the rest of your life, they will control how you feel about everyone else.

What point in your life....

I was watching Mystic Pizza last night and the famous husband that sleeps with the babystiter was asked " when did you meet your wife?"
He said " Oh in college, we were sophmores."

Today, I was sitting on my friends porch after work just shooting shit and enjoying the weather. He brought up that he was graduating in May and that he was worried/dissapointed he wasnt in a serious relationship. Beacuse most of his friends that graduated had a girlfriend at the time that soon turned into a fiance.

Also, I got a phone call today that one of my friends since I was 8 years old is pregnant.

I am not in, nor even close to being in a serious relationship and god knows what I was doing my sophmore year of college, I sure as hell wasnt looking for a life long soulmate, unless you consider Evan Williams a canidate.

Is this a problem? Is this what the cultures before us want us to be acustomed to? Or am I using that as a reason? A reason that im single and blaming bein "independent and happy" on not having a serious boyfriend?

Over half the people my age are engaged, pregnant, married, in a serious relationship or on their way there.
I am in none of these categories.
I have mad love for stoli, a good book and pinot noir but, that wont bring me happiness/companionship when I am 70 years old, or will it?
We say never let another human being define your happiness.
But God put us on this planet to love one another and eventually make babies.
My dad didnt get engaged until he was 30 years old, if I have to wait until then to find a man like my dad then so be it, but what if I do watit that long and my prince charming never comes along or he came along and I let him go being to busy being "independent and stubborn."

ahhh I hate thinking. sooo many questions!!! Always have, Dad said he wondered if I could go a day without asking 100 questions.
Well atleast I have the rest of my life to figure it all out :)

Evolution

Human beings are mental. Mad. Twisted. Quirky. Broken.
We curse what we cannot change and sorrow over what could be but isn’t and can’t be. We pretend we are whole and sane when inside we are shattered. Horrifically sharp pieces we cut ourselves and others on. We want the black and white wholeness of actuality. Facts indisputable. We yearn for truth but there is a haze of grey across our vision. We claw at our eyes but the grey is inside us. Permeating, saturating, defining us.
This is humanity. We are not factual beings. We are walking shades of grey, but the joy of it is that we are suffused with colour and we paint the world with our shadings. Bright colourful splashes of hope and yearning, wishing and striving. Life is not a sum total of the facts of our existence, should not be, could never be. Because we can be evolution incarnate, each individual who is blessed in seeking more than the day to day survival. In simply…seeking MORE.
Today, I will paint those colours. I will yearn, I will strive, I will ignore facts and wish for what likely cannot be. And I will not regret or sorrow over the helpless things. The shades of grey I wish were black and white and simple. Being human is messy, complicated, and absolutely, thoroughly mental. Also delicious and joy inducing and oh-yes-I-am-so-not-alone-in-this.
And you. I love being human with you. You teach me new colours.

Sleeping brithday girl

This would be my friend Brittany, Brit Tany. Who has turned 21 this week and for some reason it was a WHOLE week celebration, full fledge tequila and whiskey to the face. Two of the nights she fell asleep on the bar at 519, and seconds away from falling asleep on the toilet at Tank. IM questioning her drinking ablities or her sleeping abilities, one of the two. Either way I hope she never turns 21 again, I feel as though I wasnt even a college student this week/weekend,  but just a "designated drinker." Detoxing for the next week, no drinking other than a glass of wine and bendryl before bed each night.

The move the Truman Show abs. freaks me out! What if that was your life, all taped and planned and everyone was watching. I dont like to even think about this, that that could even be possible or I will turn into sketchparnoidaymcgee.

Bubble wrap turned 50 years this week.
Originally bubble wrap was conceived as a wallpaper. Since that did not work out, it was used as a wrapping material. Every year enough bubble wrap is made to stretch it all the way to moon and back.

I HATE over studying for a test when it is abs bullarky!

I also wish I could pull a baseball cap off as good as Jessica Simpson.
I never got down the concpet of Pig Latin back in middle school. Now I really wish I did so when my Spanish teacher asks me a question tommrow morning in class I can respond with some smart ass comment in Pig Latin.
I also dont know where I got these huge bruises on my thighs? Results from Brittany Kymers 21st birthday if I had to guess.

Frazzled

I've felt a bit loose at the edges lately. You know, one of those weeks where nothing seems to fit and words get interpreted differently than you meant? One of those weeks where no matter how hard you try, something has been forgotten or not finished or come out wrong. There are moments like this, and sometimes because there are so many moments, it seems to become the theme of your day or week. Staying in the moment always helps, but sometimes the moment is so intense or comes on the heels of so many other moments, that I just end up feeling frazzled.
These days are above all the most important days.

These are the days that mindfulness matters even more. These are the days where we learn what true mindfulness means at the very core of our being. These are the days that sometimes we forget about our mindfulness practice and learn that trying too hard and doing too much isn't being mindful either.

internships

http://www.businessballs.com/curriculum.htm#applying-for-internships

You should approach applying for internships in much the same way as looking for a job. Therefore much of what appears on this page about CV writing and covering letters for full-time jobs and career advancement will be relevant if you are trying to find a placement for work experience or an internship. The tips and ideas on the job interviews section are also relevant to seeking and applying for and successfully gaining internships and work experience placements.
It's essential to research prospective internship employers. And plan this well in advance. People who leave things until the last minute reduce their options, and increase the amount of competitive pressures involved. Also, planning and researching early in the process will maximise the chances of identifying and securing the best placements.
Employers will be impressed by people who have clearly planned ahead of the rest. Employers will not be impressed by those who've obviously left things late.
Be creative about the way you research your employer market sector(s). First decide on the sector(s), and what you want to do.
Answer this:
Do you define your target sector(s) 'vertically' - according to 'vertical markets', such as retail, solicitors, accountants, charities, healthcare, transport, sports, leisure, etc.; or do you prefer to define your target employers 'horizontally' - according to services and professions that are used across all industries, such as administration, sales, financial, legal, creative, production, quality management, business management, human resources, training and development, etc? Or perhaps a combination of the two, for example, I want to get an internship as a HR person in a charity, or as a production designer in a hi-tech manufacturing company?
However you define your target sector, it's important to do so, because this gives you something specific to aim at. Clarity here is extremely valuable. Clear aims have a much greater chance of being met than fuzzy or indeterminate ideas. This is because we can build an action plan around a clear aim. We can't build a plan around a vague idea.
The action plan starts with researching your target market or sector, however you define it. Focusing on a defined sector helps because certain economies of scale come into effect: commonalities exist between similar organisations and situations which save our time and enable efficient use of our efforts. We can get into a groove and a mind-set that will work in lots of similar situations. Being vague and having no focus makes it impossible to derive these advantages. Variety might be the spice of life, but it's not helpful in putting together a targeted action plan, where focus, consistency, familiarity, knowledge, expertise and professionalism are the important criteria for success.
Research is relatively easy using the internet - but remember the phone as well, especially when you locate a contact who might guide you. Try to identify the focal points where information is gathered and disseminated for your target sector(s). Most vertical industry sectors - and professions - are represented by at least one trade association or professional body or institute. Large sectors will be represented by many different trade associations, bodies and institutes - each of which represents a sub-sector or 'niche' within the main sector. Each representative body will generally have a trade magazine or journal, and also probably a website. These pivotal points will enable you to find out most of what you need to know so as to identify prospective internships (and employers). Use the phone to talk to people in these organisations - editors and secretaries are very knowledgeable and many are very helpful. Try to network and seek referrals from contacts, each time asking politely for help - just be honest and courteous about what you are trying to achieve and many people will be extremely helpful. Accept the fact that you will find yourself barking up the wrong tree on a few occasions - no problem - move onto the next point of contact. Sooner or later you will find what you seek.
What you seek of course is of course a good list of potential employers (and relevant contact details) who fit your criteria. Your criteria will extend beyond market sector and job function. Geography, organisation size, market position, style and culture might also feature in your ideal profile of an internship organisation. Again, define and describe to yourself what you are seeking - an employer profile - and use your research sources to compile a list of the organisations that meet it.
Researching individual organisations on the internet and by telephone, and by requesting details from them (sales brochures, annual reports, etc) helps to build up a feel of the market and or professional sector early on, and this individually focused research is very beneficial later in the process when you begin to tighten your specification and list of prospective employers. This detailed research will directly improve your written approach, and you performance at interview.
When approaching organisations for internships or work experience placements, resist the temptation to send out lots of emails. Letters are best. Emails give a far lower rate of response than letters. Letters have to be opened, but emails don't, and many are binned as junk or spam. Follow the principles on this page to write and send the most impressive CV and cover-letters possible. It's not necessary to have had loads of work experience to create a great-looking impressive CV. See the notes above about writing CVs with little or no work experience.
See also the tips on business writing and also the techniques for writing introductory sales letters, which all relates to the process you are undertaking. Remember, you are selling yourself. For that matter you should also look at the sales training page too, which contains a lot of useful guidance about identifying what people want and developing a proposition to meet those needs, both of which are central to what you are doing.
Telephoning before writing is a good idea. This enables you to qualify the good opportunities and remove the no-hopers. Phone the PA (personal assistant) of the decision-maker, so as to make the introduction, to ask about and qualify the opportunity and process of application and selection, and ask them to look out for your letter. If you are referred to another person or department go with their flow unless you are convinced it's taking you to the wrong place.
Carrying out telephone follow-up to the PA's, and your overall persistence after you've sent your letters and CVs, will also greatly improve your success.
Also helpful is networking (asking contacts for referrals and suggestions about other opportunities) to find the opportunities that best suit your capabilities and aspirations. Networking among smaller business in the same sector can be very effective and would be a useful tactic for example if you wanted to find a placement in a small firm situated nearby or connected with lots of similar providers. Many owners and directors know each other well and are often quite happy to refer you elsewhere. Just because firms compete with each other does not prevent them from referring this sort of interest between themselves when asked. So ask.
Editors of trade journals will often have a good idea of who are the biggest graduate recruiters and who offer most internships within certain sectors. Research can be as easy or difficult as you make it. Try to find the people who know most about what you want to discover and seek their help.
When it comes to sending letters and CVs to your selected organisations, writing personalised letters that explain why you'd like to work for the particular practice gives you a significant advantage over other people who send out an obvious mailshot-type letter, oriented to nobody in particular.
Emphasise what you can do for the employer and your passion for the field or profession or industry, rather than being seen only to seek what they can do for you.
Be flexible on fees and salary rates. Depending on your circumstances and the significance of the opportunity you might even offer to work for minimum wage or for free. It's called 'delaying gratification' or 'investing in your future' and under certain circumstances it's a very effective technique. Good employers will in any event generally pay a fair rate irrespective of what you ask for, and they'll typically be very impressed by people who love their field so much that they are prepared to make personal sacrifices as an investment towards learning and experience.
"Everybody's got to have a first [internship] somewhere. My advice is, hey, if you can find any way to afford it, try to work for free somewhere. Do anything to work in your field." (Richard Hieb, astronaut, from from The Internship Bible, 2003 Edition by Mark Oldman and Samer Hamadeh, as referenced by The Princeton Review.)
Enthusiasm and passion and commitment go a very long way with high quality employers. The decision-makers you will meet in these organisations usually love their work and their chosen field. They've become successful because of their passion and determination.
The best employers want to employ interns who demonstrate this same level of commitment.

11 Craziest Mental disorders
Dr. Strangelove syndrome: hands with a life of its own
Alien hand syndrome (or Dr. Strangelove syndrome) is a neurological disorder in which one of the sufferer's hands seems to take on a life of its own.

Sometimes the sufferer will not be aware of what the hand is doing until it is brought to his or her attention. Alien hands can perform complex acts such as undoing buttons or removing clothing.

Foreign accent syndrome: speaking your language with an accent
The syndrome causes people to speak their native language as if they had a foreign accent; for example, an American native speaker might speak with a French-sounding accent. It usually follows a severe brain injury, such as a stroke.

Capgras' syndrome: believing there's an impostor in the family
The Capgras delusion or Capgras' syndrome is a rare disorder in which a person holds a delusional belief that an acquaintance, usually a close family member or spouse, has been replaced by an identical looking imposter.

Triskaidekaphobia: fear of the number 13.
Adolf Hitler was triskaidekaphobic. A specific fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia. Tetraphobia is the fear of the number 4 in China, Japan, and Korea.

Bigorexia: working out too much
Bigorexia or Muscle dysmorphia is a disorder in which an individual becomes obsessed that they are not muscular enough. Sometimes referred to as bigorexia or reverse anorexia nervosa, it is a very specific case of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).

Muscle dysmorphia can cause individuals to:
- Constantly check themselves in a mirror
- Become distressed if a gym session is missed
- Take potentially dangerous drugs (e.g. anabolic steroids)
- Neglecting jobs/relationships/family due to exercising

Bibliomania: collecting too many books
Bibliomania is an obsessive-compulsive disorder involving the collecting of books to the point where social relations or health are damaged. The purchase of multiple copies of the same book and edition and the accumulation of books beyond possible capacity of use or enjoyment are frequent symptoms of bibliomania.

Exploding head syndrome: a loud noise in the head
It causes the sufferer to occasionally experience a tremendously loud noise as if from within his or her own head, usually described as an explosion or a roar. This usually occurs within an hour or two of falling asleep, but is not the result of a dream.

Trichotillomania: urge to pull out scalp hair
Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder characterised by the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, beard hair, nose hair, pubic hair, eyebrows or other body hair. It may be distantly related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, with which it shares both similarities and differences.

Androphobia: fear of men
Androphobia is an abnormal and persistent fear of men. Sufferers of this disorder experience anxiety even though they realize they may face no real threat. Androphobia is one of infinite possible phobias, and as such can be traced back to a specific triggering event, usually a traumatic experience at an early age.

Munchausen syndrome: faking illnesses to gain atention
In Munchausen syndrome, the sufferer feigns, exaggerates, or creates symptoms of illnesses in himself or herself in order to gain attention, sympathy, and comfort from medical personnel. The role of "patient" is a familiar and comforting one, and it fills a psychological need in people with Munchausen's.

Celebriphilia: pathological desire to have sex with a Celebrity
celebriphilia is an abnormally intense desire to have a romantic and/or sexual relationship with a celebrity.
